Explore simple pleasures in Pachmarhi, Madhya Pradesh
A beautiful hill station, surrounded by waterfalls, cave temples and the Satpura National Park, Pachmarhi offers a good escape where you can choose to explore the reserve or simply relax and chill out in the many quiet colonial-era cottages around.
For a great showcase of history, flora and fauna of the Satpura region, take a trip to Bison Lodge. If you like museums, this will be a visit you’ll highly appreciate. For some more historical appreciation, head down to Jata Shankar, which is a cave temple located within a beautiful gorge. Check out the small Shiva shrine that lies hidden under an overhanging rock. The ancient Pandav Caves are also worth visiting – they’re believed to have once provided sanctuary to the Pandav brothers.
Pachmarhi is ideal for more outdoorsy activities as well. Known for its waterfalls and natural swimming pools, Pachmarhi is home to Apsara Vihar, also known as Fairy Pool, which makes for a great visit. Located close to the Pandav caves, it’s considered the best natural pool in Pachmarhi.
There are also plenty of adventure activities on offer – check with your hotel/homestay to find out more; some could even put you in touch with clubs that organise hot-air balloon rides. You could also go on a safari in Satpura National Park.
While there aren’t a whole lot of places to eat out at in Pachmarhi, you must try the delicious malpuas, which are available all over the place. If you have a serious sweet tooth, you’ll love the sweet, syrupy discs for dessert.
Once you’ve explored everything Pachmarhi has to offer, go check out the Chauragarh Mandir close by. A popular pilgrimage centre, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located at the end of a steep climb of more than a thousand steps. The climb to the top is definitely worth all the exercise, as there are pretty views to be had of the forest and hills around Pachmarhi.
