Dotted with picturesque lakes set against an incredible mountainous landscape, the charming hill station of Nainital has long been a favourite with holiday makers across the country, and not without reason. Be it some romance with your partner, fun with family or an escape with your friends, Nainital has something for everybody. You can sit back and watch the glorious sunsets, paddle across Naini Lake, wander down Mall Road, or do absolutely nothing but enjoy the beauty all around you. Here’s how you can make the most of your time there.
Start your stay there with a visit to Snow View point, which is located at an altitude of 2270m. The views on offer from here, of the town, lake and surrounding valley, are breathtaking. Take the cable car to the point for the best views. When you get to the top, you'll find quite a few eateries and souvenir stores as well. If you’re a lover of animals, plan a visit to Nainital Zoo, also known as the GB Pant High Altitude Zoo. The zoo is home to barking deer, spotted deer and leopards, but its fantastic collection of birds, including the rare Himalayan cheer pheasant, is perhaps its most interesting aspect. There’s something for art and architecture enthusiasts as well – the Gothic architecture of the two-storeyed Raj Bhawan, once the summer residence of important British officials, is a must-see. Inspired by the Buckingham palace, the extensive gardens and well-maintained golf course are worth a visit too.
No holiday in the hills is complete without a fair bit of trekking. Consider going on the four-kilometre walk to Tiffin Top, a great picnic spot. If you have the time, trek through the Deodhar forests to Land’s End, which will take about 30 minutes. If you’re looking for a more challenging trek, there’s the 6km climb to Naina Peak (formerly China Peak) from Mallital. For some relatively relaxed outdoor activity option, consider going boating in Naini Lake. You can either go paddling across the lake or shell out a few extra bucks to get you a boatman to take you around in a gondola-style boat.
The best time to visit is during the summer, from March to June, when the weather is mild.
