At Cannes, 82 women in film call for change

The 82 women, who hold various roles in the film industry, lined the red carpet for a Women's March at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.

"On these steps today stand 82 women representing the number of female directors who have climbed these stairs since the first edition of the CFF in 1946. In the same period, 1,866 male directors have climbed these very same stairs," says Cate Blanchett.

In the 71-year history of the Cannes Film Festival, 82 films directed by  women have been featured in the main competition compared with 1,645  films by male helmers.

“The stairs of our industry must be accessible to all. Let’s climb," she says. "This is our time!" Now the group is entering the Lumiere theater.
