BJP MLA K.G. Bopaiah appointed as Pro Tem Speaker, Congress objects & threatens to go to SC
KG Bopaiah is a 3-time MLA whereas the seniormost MLA reportedly is RV Deshpande of the Congress. Constitutional experts point out that the convention followed in Houses across the country is that the seniormost MLA is made the Pro Tem Speaker. This is however only a convention and not law. Congress has questioned this. In 2010, Bopaiah’s decision as Speaker helped the Yeddyurappa government survive a trust vote.
KG Bopaiah won the Virajapete assembly constituency in Kodagu district. He defeated Arun Machaiah CS of Congress. Bhopaiah was the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from 2009 to 2013.
